We had the honor of restoring this family heirloom Hoosier cabinet (kitchen hutch) back to its original glory. We LOVE the way it turned out.
This restoration involved:
- The door and drawer hardware polished up nicely and we were able to re-use the originals
- The door hinges buffed up nicely too, and we were able to re-use the originals
- The casters (wheels on the bottom) were flat and distorted. We replaced these with period correct wooden wheel casters.
- The bread drawer was dented and rusty. We de-rusted and straightened it. Then we coated it with white metal finish.
- The pull-out work surface was stained, chipped and had rust markings. We cleaned, color matched the chips and waxed the surface.
- A broken drawer was repaired.
- We fabricated a new period correct door latch.
- The interior of the upper unit was stripped and finished with a white lacquer.
- All oak was stripped and stained and period correct color. Then it was top coated with a satin lacquer.
We researched the history of the Hoosier cabinet to verify period correct details. For instance, we discovered Hoosier cabinets provided a workstation and kitchen cabinets before built-in cabinets became a standard for kitchens. I also loved this book, Period Kitchens: A Practical Guide to Period Style Decorating. There are many styles for this kitchen hutch. It is also fun to see them all.
