Fireplace Surrounds

A surround consists of the legs on either side of the fireplace, topped with the mantel. These can be quite grand and ornate or rustic and simple. For instance, a grand and ornate style would have pillars or columns for the legs and the mantle shelf would be follow in style. Similarly, a simple and rustic style might consist of single weathered beam construction. You decide.

Mantel

The mantle either stands alone above the fireplace (floating), sits on the legs of the surround, or rests on smaller corbels.

Most mantels have a flat surface on top allowing them to function as a shelf, deriving the term mantel shelf or shelf mantel.

My favorite popular trend is for the bottom of the mantle to mimic the round arch of the fireplace opening. This symmetry of the curved arches binds the fireplace and the mantel.
