Walnut wood may be composed of the dark heartwood and the outside lighter sapwood. The heartwood and the sapwood turn on the lathe differently and accepts stain or finish differently. It is as if they are from different types of trees instead of different sections of the same tree. As a tree ages and grows the inner heartwood rings become larger. These characteristics make turning Walnut wood bowls a surprise. The combination of the darker heartwood and the lighter sapwood adds to the color variations, and reveals hidden character and uniqueness.

This bowl is already gorgeous, but as the Walnut is exposed to air the colors will darken and become richer.

When I evaluate a wood turned bowl, the first thing I look at is the thickness of the walls. If you turn the bowl too thin, you risk making a whole in the sidewall. Also, if you need to clean up an edge, you may not have the width for it. This is why many new wood turners have such thick sidewalls on their bowls. They would rather have a thickly finished bowl, then firewood. Tim has been turning wood on his lathe a long time. Therefore, this Hand turned Walnut Bowl is the perfect thickness.
